PAST EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES IN 2013KARMA
|
Do you want to take a break from your everyday life to relax your body, heart and mind after a long and strenuous year? Do you want to learn a little more about the monastic way of living? |
Come and join us for the upcoming SUMMER RETREAT! It will be held on the 6th to 8th December 2013 at Wat Pa Buddharangsee (Leumeah, Sydney).
The theme for this year will be KARMA: TO DO OR NOT TO DO?
Do you believe what goes around comes around? Do our actions affect us and those around us? Come and join us to discover more about Karma and how it applies to everyday life! This is also an excellent opportunity for you to experience the monastic way of living as well as to learn a little more about yourself and Buddhism.
There will be a host of Dhamma enriching activities such as:
Meditation, Chanting, Dhamma Talks, Dhamma Discussions and many more....
The only cost to this event is the transport fee to the Monastery. This is due to the fact that Wat Pa Buddharangsee is providing accommodation and UNIBUDS is providing food for free. But feel free to donate to the Monastery.
Places are limited (35 places only!) and are given on a first come first serve basis. However, priority may be given to UNIBUDS members if there are insufficient places.
Secure your place now! Please submit your registration form to sr.unibuds@gmail.com before Monday 25th of November.

Hope all of you are well and happy. With the hustle and bustle to get all of our assignments out of the way and reduce our workload, we're trying to get things done as soon as possible. But that's kind of difficult with so many things on our minds. So how can we maximise our time on tasks that need to be done and, essentially, have fewer headaches?
Mindfulness is really getting back in touch with our mind, body and senses. It is being aware of the thoughts and sensations that arise from internal and external factors, and being in the present moment. But how can we focus on our mind and notice sensations while being present with the breath all at once? How can we use this to be aware of ourselves in our daily life and live in the moment?
Come along and let's learn from Jim!
Each minute of meditation practice can bring us closer to achieving inner happiness together.
Speaker's Profile:
Experienced in both Mahayana and Theravada teachings, Jim Teoh has been teaching practical Buddhist courses for over ten years. During this time he has taught numerous courses and meditation sessions at one of the earliest Buddhist courses, Buddhist Library. Jim Teoh is one of our favourite speakers for many years!! So, make sure you don't miss his talk this time!

Hope all of you are coping well with studies and activities (and of course, having fun!). Thanks to all of you, this year's Bodhi Nite has been yet another great success! To celebrate this wonderful accomplishment and to express our gratitude to you, we'll be having a Bodhi Nite Thank You Dinner on 28th of September, scheduled to run from 6 to 10pm.
It will be a night of entertainment, refreshment and most importantly, free food!!! With the upcoming assignments and examinations, we tend to lose ourselves to anxiety and stress. So, why not take a part of your time and come back to the present moment and join us in this upcoming meditation workshop!
Vipassana meditation is to look inward and see ourselves clearly. To look at the cause of suffering and know that happiness comes from within, not without. To observe the body and mind's activity and to live in the present moment and gain tranquility and peace.
So come! And we can all learn how to achieve inner peace together.
Speaker's Profile:
Graham Wheeler has been practising vipassana meditation for over thirty years, studying in Australia, Burma, Thailand and Sri Lanka. He also has been leading the Blue Mountain Insight Meditation Centre's group meditation sessions in Sydney since 1999. UNIBUDS has grown and we will be celebrating its 33rd birthday this year, with our annual performance night: Bodhi Nite!
Bodhi Nite celebrates the foundation of UNIBUDS and its journey in spreading the light of wisdom to all, a journey that each of us have become a part of. In conjunction with this celebration, we hope to portray the wonderful teachings of the Buddha in a fun, creative and relaxing way.
This year, we will explore the theme of Loving-kindness and Equanimity. How can we cultivate unconditional love towards all beings, yet have a calm mind? Is it possible to have a peaceful, still mind, yet be kind and caring at the same time? Through a creative mix of stage play, singing and multimedia, we will be presenting the meaning of "Peace Within, Love Without".
In order for us to succeed, we require efforts from everyone! Do you feel like showing your talents through meaningful performance? Would you like to add colour to and form treasured memories of your university career? With 12 different departments, Bodhi Nite is a great chance for you to get involved! If the weather permits, we will also be bushwalking and having a bonfire!

What is Metta? Metta is loving kindness, which is also unconditional love, that is. To spread loving kindness to all sentient beings without seeking anything in return. Through Metta Meditation, we slowly learn to open up our heart to reduce our own greed, hatred and delusion. By raditatin loving kindness, we feel more positive in life and begin to appreciate and be grateful to the things around us. Once we are gain these positive energy, we can begin to heal the world with loving kindness.
So how do we radiate Metta through meditation? Lets find out in this meditation workshop together!

Hope all of you are coping well with studies and activities (and having fun, of course!). It has come to this time of year again, where we celebrate the holiest and most significant day in the Buddhist Calendar – Vesak day. It commemorates the three most important events in the Buddha's life, namely birth, enlightenment (Nibbana) and passing (Parinibbana).
This year's ceremony will be carried out in Mahayana Tradition. There will be some sutra chanting, Dhamma talks as well as a Buddha bathing session.
Vesak day is a day of great importance and it offers us an opportunity to reflect on the life and teachings of the Buddha. So let's take a short break from our daily work and join us in this auspicious event!

If you wish to go by yourself, we will see you at Coogee Beach!
As food will be provided, all you need to bring is some sun screen, shades, $2.10 (for a single trip bus fare) or a blue travel ten if you are meeting us at the Squarehouse, and of course yourself!
In order for us to better cater to everyone's needs, please register with the organizers with your name, contact number, email as well as your preferred transportation option. If you would like to help out with this event or to share a dish or 2, please inform us as well!
Let us come together to have fun with food and games! Please do not hesitate to contact us if there are further enquires. Looking forward to see you there!
