Hey everyone! Have you heard of the Mid-Autumn Festival?
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as “the Mooncake Festival” is the second grandest festival for Chinese after the Chinese New Year. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. On this occasion, the Chinese will light the streets and their backyards with lanterns. Family and friends will get together to enjoy mooncakes under the full moon while the children get to play with lanterns.
In conjunction with the Mooncake Festival, one of our patron’s monastery Hwa Tsang Monastery will be bringing friends and families together to enjoy the spirit of the Mooncake Festival. There will be small performances, mooncakes, Chinese tea and lanterns for the children. UNIBUDS will be arranging a trip to Hwa Tsang Monastery to celebrate this joyous occasion. At the same time, UNIBUDS will also have a “mini choir”, singing ‘The Round Moon’. Please contact Elizabeth if you are interested to be part of the “mini choir” or/and if you would like to come along with us to celebrate this joyous occasion.
Meeting Point & Time:

For those who want to know more about our society, don't hesitate to contact us! Hope to see you there!
Hope you are all doing very well. UNIBUDS is holding yet another meditation workshop for you and the topic is Vipassana Meditation. Whether you are cruising along peacefully or feeling overwhelmed by sheer amount of work uni offers and so, generally feeling dissatisfied with how things are going, this meditation workshop will teach you ways to be more aware of the present moment, particularly integrating awareness of the breath and the body to enhance a sense of well-being and peace.
Vipassana meditation is about seeing things as they really are, focusing on the interconnection between the mind and the body, paying close attention to the physical sensations that make up the form of life that is our body. Through observing our body and mind, we can enter a self-exploratory journey to dissolve impurities of the mind and breed loving-kindness and compassion within ourselves.
Speaker's Profile:
Michael Dash has been a Buddhist practitioner for over twenty years, studying in Australia, Thailand and Burma, where he trained in satipatthàna vipassanà meditation in the Mahasi tradition. Michael has taught courses and retreats in Melbourne and Sydney, including courses at the Buddhist Library, Wat Buddha Dhamma and the Blue Mountains Insight Meditation Centre. He teaches Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and is a professional counselor.

After halfway through the semester and all of the energy-draining assignments, has anyone feel like they may have lost a bit of touch with Buddhism? Fret not, because our Scripture Study Workshop is back! So if you are waiting for a chance to learn more about Buddhism, or if you have questions about the Dhamma that you want to discuss in an open environment – drag your friends along and join us for a fun and friendly Dhamma discussion session!
What is Scripture Study?
From times to times some of you (like myself) may have some doubts when you hear about Buddhism from others – “How would I know what are the correct teachings? How do I know if what other people tell me is true Buddhism? Am I on the right path? Knowing this would happen, the Buddha made his advice clear;
"Without approval or scorn, take careful note of (others) words, and make them stand against the Suttas (Discourses) and tally them against the Vinaya (Rules)." (DN 16)
Precisely, at Scripture Study, we will discuss hands-on the teachings of the Buddha (and his disciples') from some of the earliest Buddhist recordings.
Our theme
The theme for this Scripture Study workshop will be on “Four Noble Truths - The Truths about Suffering”.
What will we be doing?
The schedule for this Scripture Study Workshop will be as follows:
1. Small introduction to Scripture Study Workshop and its purpose
2. Discussion of the suttas in groups, led by facilitator(s)
3. Group presentation – what each group has learned, any interesting points that come across.
For many of you, this will be a new experience as you might be exploring a new means to study Buddhism! Do not fret! Anyone new to Buddhism is also welcome.
Disclaimer: Like other UNIBUDS activities, there is no sectarian division in Scripture Study. This means that we welcome participants from all Buddhist backgrounds. Through this activity we aim to enhance our understanding of Buddhism in an open-minded way.

With mid-semester exams and assignments lurking around the corner, chances are that the rising stress levels and mental fatigue will have worked up quite an appetite for some, if not most people. Think it’s time to “have a break, have a Kit Kat”? Think again – UNIBUDS is back to fill those empty tummies and give you a much-needed break from all that study and work with our next Potluck!
For those that haven’t had the chance to participate in our legendary Potlucks, this is a social event where everyone brings a dish or two to be shared with others, an amazing opportunity to meet new friends, try new dishes and have loads of fun! Feel free to whip up your most impressive vegetarian dish or bring something from your favourite restaurant, because you can’t spell potluck without f-o-o-d (well, you technically can… but you get the idea 😉).
Apart from our usual food and games, we’ve decided to introduce a little twist into this Potluck, but as to what, our lips are sealed for now 😊 Have we caught your attention? Bring your friends and join us for a memorable night (plus who else in the grand history of mankind would ever say no to free food?)

Do you like to draw or paint? Are you one of those who are imaginative and loves to doodle whenever a pen and paper are within reach? Or would you like to learn how to paint? Here comes the opportunity to show off your artistic skills.
Unibuds presents “Art of the Year” where participants come together to challenge their artistic and painting skills by incorporating Dhamma into art. You will be in a team of 4-5 members and each team will create one canvas painting. You will be given time to bond and brainstorm with your team so don’t worry too much if you are scared you’ll get a “painter’s block”. This is a good opportunity for you to meet new friends, have fun painting and learn the Dhamma in an interesting way!
Besides, we will provide lunch and refreshments to ensure that your tummy will be happy throughout the day. We will also provide the necessary equipment for this event, such as painting canvas, acrylic paint, brushes etc. There will also be prizes for everyone to bring home! If this is not enough incentive for you to join, your team’s artwork will be exhibited during our annual performance night, Bodhi Nite!
So what are you waiting for? Bring along your friends, empty stomach and enthusiasm to paint :D If you are interested, please kindly register through the link below and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!

UNIBUDS will be holding its long-awaited annual event, the Autumn Retreat at Sunnataram Forest Monastery during this upcoming break. This is the perfect opportunity for you to enjoy a short get-away from your hectic routine to learn more about the Dhamma and experience a peaceful monastic life away from the busy city. So, come join us and enjoy this unforgettable experience with your spiritual friends!
What will we be doing?
Under the guidance of Phra Mana Viriyarampo, the abbot of Sunnataram Forest Monastery, we will be learning different types of meditation (including tai chi meditation!!!), getting in touch with the Dhamma, and practising Buddhist teachings in real life simulations through sketch and discussions. If the weather permits, we will also be having a BONFIRE!
What if I'm not a student, UNIBUDS member nor a full-on Buddhist?
All are welcome! The retreat - and the Monastery itself - is about opening the doors of Buddhism for you to explore. However, due to limited spaces, UNIBUDS members will be prioritised, and a first-come-first-serve basis applies. So do register soon so you don't miss out! As a sign of respect to the Monastery, participants must attend the full retreat for 3 days 2 nights.
How can I register?
Please register online by clicking here.
Note: There will be a $10 registration deposit, which will be refunded to you after the retreat. This is to minimise participants pulling out last minute which will be inconvenient for the monastery and take up spots for those who didn’t manage to get one. The purpose of this deposit is to reserve a place for participants who are really interested so we can have a better estimate of the number of participants and ensure the retreat will proceed smoothly. Thank you for your understanding :)

Need a little break from studies after the finals? One of the annual auspicious days of Buddhism is coming up and we would like to invite you to join us in celebrating Vesak Day! First of all, what is Vesak Day? It is a day to commemorate three significant events of the Buddha’s life - his birth, his enlightenment (Bodhi) and his passing (Parinibbana). It is a day to reflect back on the Buddha’s teachings that have been passed on over the course of time.
During Vesak Day, there will be chanting followed by short Dhamma Talks. Furthermore, we will have a Buddha Bathing ceremony to signify the purification of the body, speech and mind. Vesak Day is a blessed and joyful event that should not be missed! Hope we can all come together on this auspicious day to learn and practise the the Buddha's teachings. May all be well and happy.

Need a little break from study on the weekend but don’t know what to do? UNIBUDS is organising a trip to one of our patron's monastery, Wat Pa Buddharangsee to celebrate and help out at the Songkran festival together.
Songkran, also known as Thailand Water Festival, is the most important festival for the Thai people and is celebrated as the traditional Thai New Year. On this day, Thai people sprinkle water to show respect to the elderly including family members, friends, neighbours and monks. There will also be a series of activities, such as chanting, blessing, short sermon, fundraising Food Fete, South-East Asian traditional dances and more held in Wat Pa on the day itself.
Besides enjoying the festival, we will also be volunteering by helping out the monastery in sorting out foods and other requisites to Sangha, escort during Songkran Parade and packing up of food stalls, which makes it a more meaningful day.
Remember to register before 13th April (Sat) by contacting or emailing Elizabeth or Michele. Hope to see you at Songkran!

How’s the semester going for you? Are you overloaded with work? Feeling stressed? Or simply just nailing everything that’s coming your way? One way or another, everyone deserves a break! That’s why we’re bringing you our first Potluck of the year!
So what is Potluck? Is it a pot? Is it luck? Its neither (maybe pot :p), Potluck is a social event where everyone brings a dish to be shared. This is a great opportunity for everyone to just gather around, make some friends, grab some food and have some fun! Also, for those who love to cook, feel free to do so and bring along your best dishes (note that all dishes must be vegetarian). For those who are a little shy to show off your cooking skills (for now), you’re still more than welcome to join us for the night, but we do encourage everyone to bring a pot (well in this case, food), because what is a potluck without pots (food)? Besides food and games, we will also be introducing our upcoming Amazing Race (spoiler alert!). Sounds interesting? Come along to find out more!
As usual, we’re aiming to have a variety of food for everyone to enjoy, so do let us know what you are planning to bring and share with everyone. We hope to see all of you there, and bring your friends along too, because the more the merrier!
