EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES IN 2020

Scripture Study Workshop 2 - Kamma (Karma) - Our Actions in life

UNIBUDS Activity

“when these spheres of bad, unskillful wishes are seen and heard to be given up by a mendicant … their spiritual companions honor, respect, revere, and venerate them.”

2020 is almost over in the blink of an eye. Our final Scripture Study Workshop of the year is here! (although it’s my first one hehe) Whether you missed going to Dhamma Talks for the rest of the term (or year) or wanting to learn more about Buddhism – come along and join us for a fun and friendly Dhamma discussion session to explore the teachings of the Buddha and answers to the questions you have about the Dhamma!

Wondering what Scripture Study is?

As we all gain more time to focus on our mind and spirit staying at home this year, maybe you’d like to take up the initiative to learn the teachings of the Buddha. Occasionally, you may have felt uncertain about some quotes or teachings of Buddhism you’ve encountered, and start to wonder: “What is true Buddhism? What are the correct teachings?” Or perhaps you’ve been wanting to learn but are unsure how and are looking for some company to learn together with? Whatever your reason may be, come along with the UNIBUDS family to explore Buddhism in a way never seen before.

The Buddha advised us to “not give up your authority and follow blindly the will of others” and instead “believe it only if you have explored it in your own heart, mind and body and found it to be true. Work out your own path, through diligence.” At Scripture Study, we will discuss the teachings of the Buddha and his noble disciples from some of the earliest Buddhist records.

What will we be doing?

Here’s a brief schedule for how this Scripture Study Workshop will be run:
  1. A small introduction to Scripture Study Workshop.
  2. Small group discussion of the Suttas, led by our friendly and insightful facilitator(s).
  3. Group presentations of the Suttas – each group gets a chance to share what they have learned and any interesting points that have come across.

For many of us (including myself), Scripture Study is a new experience as we explore another approach to study Buddhism! Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns. Feel free to drag your friends along as we’d love to meet new buddies! Anyone new to Buddhism is always welcome.

Theme

Our theme for this coming Workshop is “Where It Begins” as we explore the birth of affections and blemishes.

Disclaimer :

Like all UNIBUDS activities, Scripture Study is not associated with sectarian division. UNIBUDS welcomes participants from all backgrounds to discuss and learn about Buddhism in an open and welcoming environment.

Bodhi Nite 2020
Unboxing the Present - The Gift of Living in the Moment

UNIBUDS Annual EVENT

Bodhi Nite is a celebration of UNIBUDS 40th anniversary full of amazing online performances and multimedia screenplay expressing the Buddha's teachings in a fun and engaging way. Not only through performances, but we will also have Buddhist speeches from our patrons, Venerable Phra Thepsilaporn from Wat Pa Buddharangsee and Venerable Tsang Hui from Hwa Tsang Monastery.

This year, the theme is Mindfulness. Mindfulness typically refers to the mindful awareness of our physical and/or mental experience happening from moment to moment. In Buddhism, right mindfulness must be guided by the right understanding and incorporated with the remaining factors of the Noble Eightfold path.

Scripture Study Workshop 2

UNIBUDS Event

Throughout the adversities of recent times, the light of the Dhamma continues to provide warmth and joy and guide us all on the path of faith and understanding. As 2020 edges closer to its half-way mark, our second Scripture Study Workshop has arrived. We warmly invite all members to a reflection of the Dhamma, contemplation of the Buddha’s teachings and discussion of Buddhism’s most significant scriptures.

Wondering what Scripture Study is?

Perhaps it was coincidence that first brought you in contact with the Dhamma. Perhaps it was the intricacy of the Buddha’s teachings or the interest of a spiritual path fostered by generations before our own that gave rise to a fascination of Buddhism and its universal values. Whatever it may be, come along with us as we explore the mysteries of the Dhamma and dive into its application in the context of the contemporary world.

In times past, the Buddha urged his disciples to generate "endeavors," activate "persistence" and uphold their "intent" for the development of “skillful qualities.” (Magga-vibhanga Sutta SN 45.8) At Scripture Study, we will embark on a journey of discovery and explore the significance of the Buddha’s teachings. The Dhamma is an ocean of knowledge. Come with us to explore its greatest depth.

What will we be doing?

The schedule for this Scripture Study Workshop is as follows:

  • Introduction to Scripture Study Workshop.
  • Group discussion of the Suttas, led by our friendly and insightful facilitator(s).
  • Group presentations of the Suttas – key messages, interesting points and their significance.

Scripture Study is open to everyone, from those exploring Buddhism for the first time to those who frequently attend Dhamma talks. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns. To sign up, please click here.

    Theme

The theme for this Workshop is “Healing” as we explore the application of the Dhamma in the face of adversity and the correlation between psychological healing and physical health.

    What to bring?

You, your friends, lots of questions and a big love for learning!

    Disclaimer

Like all UNIBUDS activities, Scripture Study is not associated with sectarian division. UNIBUDS welcome attendees from all backgrounds to discuss and learn about Buddhism in a friendly and joyous environment.

“There are four qualities that lead to a person's happiness and well-being in this life.”

As our holidays come to the conclusions and university returns, we welcome each other to another year of joy, growth and learning under the light of Buddhism. Following a fruitful Orientation Week and outstanding O-Picnic, the first Scripture Study Workshop of 2020 is upon us. Come along with us as we explore the life and work of the Buddha, the practices he set forth and their universal significance in our world.

In his final address, the Buddha advised his disciples to "strive" to obtain knowledge and understanding through "earnestness" and "heedfulness." Meditation Workshop 1 - Connection of Buddhism and Meditation

    UNIBUDS Meditation workshop
    Venerable Neng Rong

I hope you are coping well with the busy university life. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed and restless sometimes. At UNIBUDS, the meditation team recognises the importance of a clear and relaxed state of mind to help you succeed and perform well at university. So, we’d love for you to join the
    💛Meditation Workshop #1 — “Connection of Buddhism and Meditation.”💛

In this workshop, you’ll enjoy a guided meditation by our speaker and discover the purpose of meditation in Buddhism. There are different types of Buddhist meditation that you will be introduced to and learn about their distinctive features. You’d also have the chance to clarify any doubts you may have about the topic of discussion.

It’ll be an informative, interactive and fun workshop! See you there!

    Speaker Profile:
Venerable Bom Hyon Sunim was first ordained in the Theravada Forest tradition in the 90’s and later took bhikkhuni precepts in the Korean Seon (Zen) tradition in 2000. Returning to Australia in 2009, she managed the prison chaplaincy project for the Buddhist Council of Victoria and subsequently established the Buddhist Spiritual Healthcare project. In 2013, Sunim was invited to represent the Buddhist community on the newly-forming Multifaith Religious Advisory Committee to the Australian Defence Forces; she continues to serve in this role.
Sunim was also the resident bhikkhuni at the Bodhi Ahm Buddhist Meditation Centre in Melbourne, offering regular teachings and retreats until the property was sold in 2016.
In Jan 2017, Sunim took up residence at the Jongbopsa Korean Temple in Sydney. She serves as a Chaplain at Western Sydney University and offers teachings at Buddhist and interfaith centres in Sydney and Melbourne.
